Bern is easy to reach by public and private transport.
There are direct trains from Milano (3h), Paris (4h), Frankfurt (4h), Berlin (8h) and many further connections with single transitions in Zurich, Basel or Geneva.
If you arrive by plane, it is convenient to arrive in
Starting June 1st this year, tourists (and workshop participants count as tourists in this respect), who lodge in one of the local hotels (and hostels, I guess), obtain a free public transport ticket for their stay in Bern. It includes all buses & trams in Bern (incl. the airport bus to Belp), plus the cable car to the local mountain, the Gurten. You obtain it from your Hotel, and I guess a valid confirmation of your booking will be valid upon arrival.
- Zurich with a direct train connection from this airport to Bern (every half hour, 70 min train ride),
- Geneva with a direct train connection from this airport to Bern (every half hour, 110 min train ride)
- Basel Mulhouse with bus and train to Bern (15 Min bus to Basel main station, 60 min train ride).
- Bern-Belp is Bern's own airport. It is small but convenient but does not have very many direct connections.
